Allowing the artwork to speak for its self.
The Opportunity
Beyond the Diagnosis is a non-profit organization that works towards increasing awareness of rare diseases in the medical community through fine art. In anticipation of publishing their fourth catalog, they reached out to us in need of an updated design. Their catalogs are an extremely important part of their outreach. They allow the viewers to form a connection with the children in the portraits leading to an interest in learning more about their diseases. With that in mind, it was our goal to display the artwork front and center while keeping the piece informative and easy to digest. We saw the value of what Beyond the Diagnosis brought to the rare disease community and were honored to have the opportunity to bring awareness to such an important topic.
Our Approach
We strategized with out-of-the box thinking in order to bring a fresh perspective to the design of the catalog. We pushed the boundaries on the layout and size of the artwork in order to put an emphasis on connecting the child’s face and name to their diseases. We found a way to make the artwork and content cohesive despite the immense differentiation in text length and artwork size through a flexible layout. The treatment of the children’s names came from the artistic nature of the catalog, resembling paint strokes, and pulled from the idea of children drawing outside of the lines. Since it was to be read as a high-level catalog, we focused on maintaining a clear, concise hierarchy on the right-hand pages.
Result
We created a refined and highly customized catalog for Beyond the Diagnosis that educates and emphasizes the existence of the rare disease community. They are now able to use this booklet as a resource to inform people on a multitude of rare diseases while associating those afflictions with the names and faces of real children. With our help, Beyond the Diagnosis has a printed piece that allows them to market their cause and continue their efforts to inform and gain support for the rare disease community. We are proud to have helped Beyond the Diagnosis create a publication that draws attention to their cause and will continue to increase awareness for years to come.
